Black Man In America (lyrics)

No Justice

No Peace

No Justice

No Peace

One people world

two sides of life

one in hell

one paradise

that’s waiting’ for you

in the promised land…

Brothers gettin’ shot

no hesitation

a way of life for a generation

yes its all true

you don’t understand…

Now I lay me down to sleep

I pray the Lord my soul to keep

and if I should die before I wake

I pray the Lord my soul to take…

We been strugglin’ 50 years

sacrifice through blood and tears

just trying’ to break through

to this here promised land…

You don’t know what its like

to be a Black Man

in America…

Protect and Serve don’t apply

if you ain’t white

then you’re born to die

you know they used to hang you

right where you stand…

History Hollywood

image of the Black Man

ain’t no good

that’s how they $ell you

it’s they masterplan…

I cross the street

you lock your door

clutch your purse

and then pray the Lord

won’t let me see you.

What did I do wrong?

Try to get a job

on the application

when you check “Black”

for the information

they don’t call you

Hey Hey…

You don’t know what its like

to be a Black Man

in America…

No Justice

No Peace

No Justice

No Peace

BOHEME ROCKSTAR — ANDRE CYMONE: “BLACK MAN IN AMERICA”

Rock n soul hero Andre Cymone holds nothing back on his new single, “Black Man in America,” which premiered earlier today on Okay Player. Cymone, known to most as one of Prince’s earliest collaborators–and undoubtedly one of the key architects of what would become known as the Minneapolis sound, went on to release a string of solo singles and albums after he left The Revolution at the dawn of the ‘80s (most notably, “The Dance Electric” and “Kelly’s Eyes,” and his most recent album, 2013′s The Stone), and wrote andproduced hits for artists such as Jody Watley and Jermaine Stewart. Using his platform to address urgent social and political issues, he offered proceeds from the sale of his single, “America,” to President Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign, and also released a song dedicated to Trayvon Martin (”Trayvon”), the Florida teen slain by an overzealous white neighborhood vigilante. He’s recently teamed up with fellow soul rebels Martin Luther andSandford Biggers as part of the latter’s group, Moon Medicin, and turned in a killer performance as part of The Revolution’s sold-out, three-night reunion shows at First Avenue Labor Day weekend.

Okayplayer premieres "Black Man In America"

It’s been a minute since my last release, it’s been a crazy year and a crazy time for me personally, but I’m more focused and more determined than ever to start a musical revolution.

We’re all in this thing together so I’m not going to be able to do it without your help.

It’s time for us to reach out to each other and use what we do as individuals to collectively make the world take a closer look in the mirror and realize we’re headed in the wrong direction,

We need to fully engage in this conversation of police brutality and injustice. For those who are not living a comfortable life, life is rough but there is light and we gotta work for it. That’s what this music is all about. If you’re down for a revolution I need you to spread this track, make it an anthem, make it go viral and together we can be the light, we can change the direction, we can gain and give the respect we have lost through these past few decades…
The time is now,

Thank you,

Andre Cymone

a thank you

I really wanted to say thank you to the beautiful people who came from literally all over the world to stand with us, party with us, jam with us and love with us as we tried to say goodbye to our friend and brother. As most of you know for many years he was my best friend and it’s really hard to say goodbye to a best friend… I guess when your best friend wrote such beautiful, timeless and amazing music, the best way to celebrate him and his spirit is to share his music, melodies and the words that he left behind with the people of his hometown who love him and the many many fans from all around the world, It’s impossible for anyone to really know but, I think he would like that…
Thanks to the crew who simply went above and beyond to make the show look and sound amazing. Thanks to First Avenue for supporting us Minneapolis artists through the years. Thanks to The Revolution for inviting me to participate. Thanks to Bobby Z for not letting me say NO…. But most of all thanks to all of you who took the time and spent your hard earned money to help us heal and try to in his words “get through this thing called life.
